PROMOTING THE PEÑARROYA-PUEBLONUEVO CERCO INDUSTRIAL AS A TOURIST ATTRACTION USING VIRTUAL REALITY.

SECTION: Industrial memory, circular economy and industrial tourism in the new normality.

The existing industrial heritage in Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo (Córdoba) came about as a result of the surge in mining activity seen in the region in the second half of the 19th century, with the arrival of companies funded by France. The legacy of this period deserves special attention, both for the value of its architecture and for everything it created, giving rise to the first newly created industrial town in Andalucia. Since it was declared a Bien De Interés Cultural in 2005, many of the existing buildings have been damaged and plundered for materials, until it was finally awarded protected status in 2019.

Currently, despite its status as an area deserving study and analysis, it continues to be largely unknown by the authorities, given the state of the area in which it is found. Current legislation does not permit access, which impedes the improvement and sharing of knowledge. For this reason, a virtual reality tour of the Cerco Industrial is being created, from the former Santa Rosa mine viewpoint, with the goal of promoting the area. This particular spot was suggested as it is the only location suited for visitation, and because it marks the first intervention in recovering this heritage site – the historic mining centre of Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo. The tour will offer visitors an immersive visit to all the buildings in the Cerco Industrial, both in their current state and their original state, using augmented reality and 3D technology to recreate them. The use of this technology guarantees its development through open access to the heritage site, combined with rigorous historical, documental and architectural study, creating a new future for the Cerco.
