«Reuse of the railway space for a cultural purpose. The case of Coca del Monte Station, Esperanza, Puebla».

SECTION: Food routes and circuits, training and dissemination, responsible and sustainable tourism.

Many buildings from the industrial period are still preserved, some of them are relevant for their contribution to the emergence and development of communities, the promotion of commercial activities and the innovation in their creation with the implementation of steel. Part of this important industrial architectural heritage is made up of the railway stations, which emerged in the Industrial Revolution during the 19Th Century. Nowadays some of them have been abandoned, putting their conservation at risk. One of those abandoned cases is the Boca del Monte Station in the municipality of Esperanza, Puebla; which has currently fallen into disuse, generating problems at an architectural, social and cultural level.

This work presents the project to reuse the station which had importance in different aspects during its creation, developed in response to a request from municipal authorities and community representatives from Boca del Monte. The project offers a new use to this building in order to adapt it to the new needs of the community and thus achieve its conservation.

With this work it is possible to recover the habitability of one of the railway buildings which has fallen into disuse, considering the capacity of the building to offer viable spaces to develop cultural activities and so that it can be once again useful for the society.
